Nepal travel documents: check before you leave

For Indian travellers, carry a valid passport or original voter ID. For other nationalities, check the visa and border-entry rules for your exact route.

CHAPTER 01

Indian citizens: use the official guidance

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu advises Indian travellers between India and Nepal to carry a valid Indian passport or Election Commission identity card. Its air-travel guidance specifies an original physical voter ID; downloaded voter-ID printouts, Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted air-travel documents. Do not plan on Aadhaar alone.

Air journeys and land crossings should not be treated as identical checklists. Verify the requirements for your actual border and carrier. Children’s and other exceptional cases need individual confirmation rather than a blanket claim that one family document is sufficient.

CHAPTER 02

Non-Indian travellers

The Indian-citizen visa exemption does not apply to everyone. Check Nepal’s requirements for your nationality and intended land crossing. If the tour returns to India, your Indian entry permission must allow that return. A tour booking does not provide a visa or guarantee entry.

CHAPTER 03

Keep the documents available

Carry originals where required, with backup copies stored separately. Names on bookings should match the travel document. Keep them in your day bag on both border days. Do not upload identity-document scans through the general enquiry form; use an agreed secure process if documents become necessary for a confirmed booking.

CHAPTER 04

Vehicle paperwork is a separate matter

An Indian-registered vehicle travelling beyond the nearby border municipal area or staying overnight requires the appropriate customs permission. A same-day border-town pass is not a multi-day Nepal tour permit. Confirm scope, validity and responsibility with the operator.

CHAPTER 05

Check again before departure

These links are a starting point, not a promise that requirements will remain unchanged. Confirm the final checklist with the official authority and carrier before travelling. Changes in border operations can affect a route even when the traveller’s documents are valid.

CHAPTER 06

Start with nationality, route and age — not the package name

A document check begins with who is travelling and how each person enters Nepal. Record the nationality shown on the passport, whether the journey crosses by air or land, and the age of any child. Indian residence, an Indian phone number or membership of an Indian tour group does not establish Indian citizenship. Mixed-nationality families should check each traveller separately rather than applying one member’s rules to everyone.

Keep the access journey separate from the Nepal land package. A traveller flying from Mumbai to Kathmandu needs to satisfy the airline’s boarding requirements as well as Nepal entry requirements. Another traveller taking a train to Gorakhpur and then crossing the border follows a different sequence of checks. If the route changes after booking, repeat the document check before buying the replacement ticket.

CHAPTER 07

Prepare a travel-document folder that you can actually use

Keep the original accepted travel document where you can reach it during the journey. A photograph on a phone is a useful backup but should not be treated as a replacement for an original required by the carrier or authority. Store booking confirmations, accommodation contact details and the final itinerary separately from sensitive identity information. Make sure the traveller’s name on the booking matches the document being used.

For a family, identify whose originals are being carried by the group leader and confirm that the documents will remain accessible during transfers. A group leader cannot substitute their identification for another adult’s. When asking the travel desk a general eligibility question, provide the document type and traveller category first; do not send full document numbers into a public enquiry field.

CHAPTER 08

Before paying: resolve the uncertain cases

Check a child’s situation with the airline or relevant authority before reserving a ticket that cannot be changed. The same applies to a damaged document, an unclear name difference or a traveller using a document whose acceptance you have only heard about informally. Ask for the applicable official guidance, not an anecdote about what a previous group managed at a different crossing.

If a travel adviser, an airline page and an official notice appear inconsistent, resolve the discrepancy before departure. Keep a record of the guidance and the date you checked it. Rules can change, and an old screenshot may omit a condition that matters to your itinerary. The purpose of early checking is to keep the group’s holiday from depending on a last-minute argument at a boarding desk.

CHAPTER 09

Foreign visitors and onward travel

Foreign travellers should assess Nepal entry and any subsequent India entry separately. A route returning through a land border needs a visa and entry permission that cover that particular movement. Do not assume that leaving India and coming back within the validity period is automatically permitted under every visa type.

Share the proposed sequence of countries and arrival points with the desk before finalising the land itinerary. If the route needs to end in Kathmandu instead of returning to Gorakhpur, the hotel nights, transport and onward ticket all change. An apparently simple document issue can therefore require a different tour, not just another piece of paper.
