Everything worth knowing
01An overnight stop is not a safari package
Check exactly what the quotation includes.
Check exactly what the quotation includes. Hotel stay, a village walk, cultural performance, canoe outing, national park entry and jeep safari are separate items unless specifically combined in the written package. Ask where the safari operates, its duration, departure time and whether a guide and permits are included. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
02Build around arrival time
On a road trip from Gorakhpur, the border and traffic can move the arrival later than expected.
On a road trip from Gorakhpur, the border and traffic can move the arrival later than expected. Keep the first evening simple rather than selling several fixed-time activities after the drive. If a safari is the reason for coming, reserve a proper morning or afternoon and allow for the onward transfer. A second night offers more room when wildlife is the main interest.
03Travel respectfully
Choose activities that suit the season and the group's mobility.
Choose activities that suit the season and the group's mobility. Follow the local guide's instructions around rivers and wildlife; avoid approaching animals for photographs. Chitwan offers a useful change from Pokhara and Kathmandu, but it also adds packing and driving. Compare the value of that extra stop against spending longer in the place your group most wants to see.
04A Chitwan overnight is not automatically a safari holiday
Read the arrival and departure times alongside the number of nights.
Read the arrival and departure times alongside the number of nights. A late arrival followed by a morning transfer can leave time for an evening meal and perhaps a short riverside walk, but not a full programme of wildlife activities. Our announced six-day group uses one Chitwan night and excludes safari and park charges.
If wildlife is your main interest, ask for a private version with enough time for the activity you actually want. Specify whether you are considering a jeep outing, guided nature activity or another programme. The duration, provider, fees and meeting arrangements need separate confirmation.
05Keep wildlife expectations realistic
Seeing wildlife is not the same as visiting an attraction with a guaranteed performance.
Seeing wildlife is not the same as visiting an attraction with a guaranteed performance. Choose an activity for the experience of being in the landscape and follow the guide’s instructions. Do not request close contact or leave a safe route to obtain a photograph.
For families, ask the provider about age, access and participation requirements before paying. Some travellers may prefer to stay near the accommodation. Confirm how they will be looked after and how the group will reunite; a package should not assume that everyone will participate in every optional activity.
06Fit the stay between your road days
The order of Chitwan, Pokhara and Kathmandu should be assessed with your joining point and available nights.
The order of Chitwan, Pokhara and Kathmandu should be assessed with your joining point and available nights. A road transfer takes more than a distance shown on a map. Meal breaks, check-in and the actual activity timetable all affect what fits comfortably.
Before choosing a short extension, compare the value of an extra night with the activity you hope to do. Ask for arrival-day and departure-day expectations to be written separately. An itinerary that says Chitwan sightseeing without naming the activity is not enough to establish whether the stay serves your purpose.
